Muzikale mailbox (2)

In my mailbox Toronto-based Dean Marino sent me his first album, which he made under the "nom-de-plume" EX~PO. "Central Meaner Street" opens with the kind of rock track you'd expect from the likes of Buffalo Tom and other great 90s bands. Guitars prominently lead the way, with vocals luring you into the world portrayed by this album. But little frivolties like "Banana Republic" or "Burn, burn, burn" offer a glimpse of what more this man is capable of...

More guitars on In-Flight Safety's second album ("we are an empire, my dear")... The isolated location in which this band recorded the tracks, seeps through the songs of the album like the taste of salt sinks into what food it accompanies. This album is a bit darker than their debut ("The coast is clear"), but the soundscapes on offer and the melancholy being translated into the music are definite strongs of this band and this album.

And to end this week's edition of the Musical Mailbox, we've got FREE music ! Yes, that's right : the guys from Kingsbury offer their three EP's and their debut album for free on their website. They have shared stages with Stellastar* and Chuck Prophet to name two. The new EP "Lie to me" exploits the more atmospheric elements of what Kingsbury does. The songs share a strong emphasis on subtlety and dynamics, but remain gripping. The record is rich with layered compositions and Reed's voice sounds more comfortable than ever. Instrumental tracks like "Ocarina Mountaintop" and "Armada" were born out of sonic manipulations and stream of conscious recording, while songs like "Holy War" and the title track, "Lie To Me", were crafted in the studio completely live. The EP has been released for free on the band's recently rebuilt website and will have an official release early next year on Post-Records.
You can help this band and show your gratitude by donating.
