Vic Chesnutt

Last night I read it all over the internet : Vic Chesnutt died ! He was one of those really talented artists that have a solid fan base but never seem to succeed in getting much success, in spite of their sparkling, moving and heart-warming songs. It must have been around 1991, when he released "West of Rome" and Michael Stipe of R.E.M. started spreading the word that this really great artist from Athens, Georgia should not be neglected, that I got acquainted with his work. I even saw him performing at the Spiegeltent on Sint-Jacobs Square during the Gentse Feesten, the town festival of my hometown. This wheel-chaired man with his guitar made quite an impression, but as these things often go, although I followed his further releases (like "Is the actor happy?" -1995- and "About to choke" -1996-), I sort of lost track of him amidst all the great music one can discover...

This year's "At the cut" made me re-acquainted with the man, and now he died...

Vic Chesnutt, een artiest die ik ooit -toen hij nog een nobele onbekende was, wiens naam in de weken daarvoor al eens opdook in interviews met Michael Stipe van R.E.M., niet toevallig ook uit Athens, Georgia- live aan het werk zag in de Spiegeltent bij Sint-Jacobs tijdens de Gentse Feesten, is overleden. Het internet gonst ervan...

Het moet 1991 geweest zijn, toen hij net West of Rome uit had, dat ik hem zag. Ik volgde zijn latere releases nog wel (kocht Is the actor happy? in '95 en About to choke in '96), maar temidden het immense aanbod aan goeie muziek verloor ik hem wat uit het oog. Tenminste, dat was zo tot hij dit jaar het prachtige At the cut uitbracht. En nu is hij dus dood, amper 45 jaar oud.

Daarnet tijdens de afwas luisterde ik nog eens naar About to choke, en ik werd getroffen door hoezeer ik intussen vergeten was wat voor een veelzijdige artiest hij was, en wat voor een werkelijk prachtige nummers hij maakte...
